Rwanda receives World Bank support

The World Bank has approved an US$80mn International Development Association Credit for Rwanda to boost its food production

The money will be used to increase the agricultural productivity of marshlands and hillsides in the sub-watershed region and strengthen the participation of beneficiaries in market-based value chains.

The project will focus on increasing irrigated acreage of cultivated marshlands, training farmers on sustainable land management practices and boosting economic infrastructure. By the end of the project, at least 6,000 hectares of irrigated marshlands will have been rehabilitated or developed. At the same time, at least 17,000 additional hectares of hillsides will have been sustainably developed for food production.

Overall, the goal is to unlock growth, increase incomes and therefore reduce poverty in rural areas through the sustainable development of the marshlands and surrounding hillsides.
