THE LIBERIAN GOVERNMENT has announced that it is in the final stages of securing a US$1.6bn Indonesian investment in palm oil production which is expected to create 35,000 jobs. Richard Tolbert, chairman of the countrys National Investment Commission, said in a recent interview that the investment, in south-eastern Liberia, will give a major boost to the countrys post-conflict economy.

PLANT SCIENTISTS AT the University of York, in the UK, have published the first genetic map of the medicinal herb Artemisia annua. The map is being used to accelerate plant breeding of Artemisia and rapidly develop the species into a high-yielding crop.
